Materials That Offer Good Sealing, Breathability, and High Temperature Resistance: Exploring with MATRIX”

I. Breathability of Alumina Silicate Fibers

Alumina silicate fibers serve as sealing materials, preventing gas leakage from furnaces, and can also be utilized for their porous properties to allow breathability. The range of permeability varies depending on the type and bulk density of alumina silicate fiber products.

The relationship between the volume density and breathability of TOPWOOL alumina silicate fiber blankets is depicted in the following figure. It demonstrates the exponential relationship between the breathability and different volume densities of alumina silicate fiber blanket products.

There exists a distinction between conventional air permeability and air permeation rate. The following formulas are applicable under normal temperature conditions:

  • Air permeability = (air flow rate × thickness of air-permeable layer) / (area of air-permeable surface × pressure difference), unit: (cm³·cm/cm²·Pa)
  • Air permeation rate = (air flow rate × thickness of air-permeable layer × viscosity) / (area of air-permeable surface × pressure difference), unit: (cm³·cm/cm²·Pa)

II. Introduction to Alumina Silicate Fibers

Alumina silicate fibers are produced by high-temperature melting of alumina silicate materials, either by spinning or blowing. These fibers are porous, relatively coarse, and short, with diameters ranging from 3 to 5 micrometers and lengths from 30 to 250 mm. The short fibers are laid into a felt-like material of certain thickness, which is then needle-punched on both sides to form blankets used for external insulation of equipment or pipelines. These blankets can be folded, compressed, and fixed into blocks, which are then welded to the inner walls of industrial furnaces at temperatures around 1000°C to serve as refractory insulation linings. Alumina silicate fiber cotton is spun into yarn around steel wires, woven into fabric, and then enhanced for tensile strength. The resulting ceramic fiber cloth can be hung on the continuous operation furnace door to block wind or wrapped around fiber blankets or modules to enhance wear resistance and erosion resistance.

MATRIX INDUSTRY (CHINA) LIMITED has been dedicated to solving challenges in the field of high-temperature insulation for 17 years.
